How to use the Internet with Internet Explorer

Finding your way around your Internet browser

Using the buttons
You will notice that your browser window has several large square buttons near the top of the screen. These are the main navigation buttons for the Internet.
The "Stop" button does just that - stops a web page when it is loading.
The "Back" and "Forward" buttons will take you back one page and forward one page respectively.
The "Refresh" button will reload your current web page - use this if your web page gets stuck on loading, or takes too long to download.

Using the Address bar

Every Web site has an address, just like a building in a city. Often, this address is called a "URL" - pronounced by reading each letter: YOO-ARE-ELL. You need to know this address if you want to visit a specific Web site or page. If you have the URL for a Web site or page that you want to visit:
1) Click on the white space inside the IE5 Address bar.

2) Type the URL of the page. You don't need to type
http:// because IE5 automatically includes it.

3) Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Maximising your browser window

You'll want to get the best view possible when you're surfing the World Wide Web. To do this, you should maximize your IE5 window. To maximize the IE5 window:

1) Move your mouse to the top right-hand corner of IE5.

2) Touch and click the maximize button. If you don't see the button, then IE5 is already at its maximum size.

The AutoComplete Function

IE5 keeps track of Web sites you've visited, so you don't have to type in the entire URL every time. If you want to return to a site you've seen before, you can type part of the URL and AutoComplete will give you a list of possible matches from sites you've visited before.

To visit a Web site using AutoComplete:

1) Begin typing the URL into the Address bar. As you type, AutoComplete lists possible matches in a drop-down box under the Address bar.

2) Click one of the URL matches to go to the Web site you want to see.

You can also turn off the AutoComplete setting.

To turn off the AutoComplete setting:

1) Click Tools on the Menu bar, and then choose Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box appears.

2) Click the Content tab.

3) In the Personal information area, click the AutoComplete button. The AutoComplete Settings dialog box appears.

4) Click the check box to turn off AutoComplete. This feature is disabled if there is no check mark in the check box.

How to download Programs

You can get a program over the Internet by "downloading" it. That is, you go to a Web site and follow a series of steps that will transfer a copy of a program to your computer over the Internet. For example, you can download the latest version of IE5 over the Internet by going to the Microsoft site.

It often takes several minutes or even hours to download a program. It all depends on your modem speed, the size of the file, and how many other people are downloading from the same site.

To download a program:

1) Go to the Web site you want to download from.

2) Follow the site's particular download instructions. This will vary from site to site, but most sites have some type of "Download Now" button that you click. The File Download dialog box appears.

A download button.

3) Click the radio button beside "Save this program to disk" and click OK in the File Download dialog box. The Save As dialog box appears.

Select
4) Click the directory on your computer where you want to store the downloaded program. Make sure you remember the directory. You'll need this information when you install the downloaded program.

Download the file into the temp directory.

TIP: You can make a special "temp" directory where you save all your downloaded files. Then you'll know just where to find them.

A downloading box appears, showing the estimated time it will take to complete the download. The downloading box also shows the files being copied to your computer. Now, all you do is wait while the download takes place.

The downloading box estimates how long you'll have to wait.

Installing Downloaded Programs

You know the download is complete when you see the Download Complete dialog box .Then you need to follow a second process: installing the program onto your computer.

To install a downloaded program onto your computer:

1) Close any other programs you may have open.

2) Click Open on the Download Complete dialog box. This action opens the program's installation instructions. Each program has a different installation, but the following steps are typical.

Open the install file from the Download Complete dialog box.

TIP: If the Download Complete dialog box isn't visible, locate the file you downloaded (perhaps in your TEMP folder) and double-click the program icon. This action will open the program's installation instructions.

3) You may be asked to click a "Continue" or "I Agree" button, which means you are endorsing a license agreement on how you are allowed to use the software. The installation program launches.

Click the Yes Button.

4) Follow the particular installation instructions. Programs will defer, but in general you will be asked where you want the program installed. Select a location on your computer, then click Next or OK. An installation pop-up box appears, showing files being installed.

5) When the program is installed, the Installation Completed dialog box appears. You may be asked to restart the computer. You will find the new program within your program files when you restart the computer.
